This review is centered on Richard Crawford's massive new history, America's Musical Life. Also considered, though briey, are his abbreviated textbook version, An Introduction to America's Music (and the three-CD set of recordings accompanying it), and J. Heywood Alexander's annotated anthology of readings, To Stretch Our Ears: A Documentary History of America's Music, which parallels both of Crawford's books.
