Introduction

This issue of American Music is devoted to the subject of music for moving images. Whereas the journal usually includes three or four longer articles, in a change of format this issue contains thirteen short articles and a complementary set of book and recording reviews. The articles are drawn from some of the presentations made at two conferences, both of which took place in the summer of 2001. Together with a host of other recent conferences on the subject, they reflect a surge in activity.
