Jeff Smith should not be surprised to be quoted from a long-forgotten conference paper, for work as insightful and original as his bears frequent revisiting. I thank him for providing to readers of American Music the reference to his talk, a reference that fell through the cracks as my essay was being prepared for publication, and I regret my carelessness in omitting the footnote.
