Led by actor Kevin Spacey's portrayal in Beyond the Sea, 2004 saw renewed interest in singer bobby darin, including the release of four new or revised darin biographies. Still, Bobby Darin: Beyond the Song directed by Henry Astor and Jason Cilo remains the best brief introduction to darin's life and work. Newly released on DVD, this documentary is directed primarily at fans. consequently, the musical examples and facts of darin's life are embedded in a narrative of tragedy and heroism designed to bolster rather than explain his status as a pop star.
