The Popular Reception of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings

A recent online survey by BBC Radio 4 asked listeners to nominate the saddest piece of music they knew. From four hundred nominations, including pop songs, the producers whittled the list down to the five most nominated pieces and instituted a final ongoing survey. In recent voting (as of January 2007), Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings has received more votes than the other four pieces combined.
